This is Tyre Training, if you’re looking to strip body fat and pack on some real muscle, read on! Before we go into a training plan, this is what you can achieve, by pushing yourself with Tyre Training;
- Real Functional Strength - Mental and Physical toughness - Improved Speed - Improved Strength and Power - Anaerobic Conditioning - Improved Grip Strength
Interested? Oh, and did I mention that this workout can be completely free? Tyre Training is a classic strongman event, but if we use a variety of training protocols, we can easily match a workout to your goals. You will generally be able to pick one up from a Tyre depot for free as they have to pay to dispose of them, so in essence you’re doing them a favour! Once, you have your Tyre, lets head straight to the great outdoors! The Three exercises we’ll go through are ‘The Flip’, ‘The Drag’ and Box Jumps.
The Flip The classic strongman event, this will really develop a powerful drive through the hips, but I can’t think of a muscle this move won’t work! Start in a Deadlift Position close to the tyre, legs around hip width apart, toes pointing slightly out. Bend to a deep squat position while keeping the chest up and feet close to the tyre. Bring the hands underneath and powerfully drive through the floor to get the tyre moving then use the arms to complete the flip. It should be a real power move, strength and speed combined, so get that Tyre over quickly!
The Drag Wrap something around it; I use a lorry strap, though bare hands or using a rope is fine. Get both hands on the rope, with one arm bent at the elbow, the other arm straight, and sprint backwards, driving from the floor. Probably the toughest exercise I know for the quads and calves, this is a real test of the mental strength described earlier!
Box Jumps Dependent on the height or amount of Tyres available, we’ll either stack some tyres and perform bodyweight jumps, or if only one is available, add some weight, such as holding a Kettlebell or Vipr. Get close to the Tyres, really drive the arms down to accelerate into the squat, then perform an explosive jump. The tough aspect with Box Jumps is that your first rep has to be as good as the last if you’re going to get up there!
So these are the 3 main exercises we’ll put ourselves through, leaving us physically shattered but buzzing mentally. This will shake up your training routine, and with a strong mindset and high intensity, some great results will soon follow. Particularly if you’re looking to improve strength, power and torch body fat!
So grab a Tyre, get outdoors and have some fun! Willpurdue.co.uk Photography by Frank Kenny
