Steve Smith is a paratrooper in the 3rd battalion and professional athlete, Steve loves taking risks and seeks out danger, maybe thats why he is in the British Bobsleigh team. Racing down a tunnel of ice at speeds up to 140 Kilometers per hour is his job. We find out more about Steve and his battle against injury to come back strong and compete against the best at The World Championships and then the winter Olympics.
FF. Have you always had a sporting background and how did you get into bobsleigh STEVE. not as such i have allways been in to sports, a bit of an all rounder but i have been in to weight training since i left school...and being in the paras as givin me the drive to win and push myself a lot more than i thought possible, being a para also teaches me self discipline and mind over matter which i believe is a massive advantage when it comes to sport.
FF. When did you first represent england in this sport STEVE. I got in to the sport in 2003 and represented Great Britain for the first time 2004 and 2005 season and went to the world championships in clagary canada.
FF. Why did you take bobsleigh up and why do you love it so much. STEVE. its not like i took bobsleigh up, it just fell into my lap and i grasped it with both hands and ran with it, so to speak. I love it because it scares me....am i going to make it down the hill on 4 runners, did we push well....can i beat myself, its all about the speed and the massive adrenalin rush you get when racing down the ice run with your head centimeters from the track. As a team if your not working together and some thing goes wrong then you will all feel it. In my view you cant beat this sport for its skill, adrenalin and excitement.
FF. Whats the best moment in your sporting life so far STEVE. Coming 4th at Winterburge World Cup race was amazing. and coming 5th at the world champ 2006, 2007 season St Morzit
FF. What competitions have you got coming up and when. STEVE. I am in the states at the moment on a 3 week training session at Lake Placid, Salt Lake,Vancouver then 2 world Cup races back in Salt Lake and LP,then back to the UK for a week then to Europe.....we need to get top 15 first half of the season to get to the Olympics.
FF. Tell us about your injures and your training leading up to the championships. STEVE. I had a knee operation last year in october,it put me out for a year but it needed to be done i was off my feet for 2weeks then i was back on a bike on the third week and back running with in 6 weeks and it was all down to the Olympic Medical Institute in Harrow they did a great job and now im in great shape and ready to compete with the best.
The world championships will be shown on sky and you will be able to see Steve representing Great Briton with the rest of the team. Then its back on with more hardcore training before they battle in the Olympics.
