Relaxation is a vital ingredient in keeping a healthy mind, body and soul. With all the stresses and anxieties of everyday life, its important that all of us take 30 mins a day to relax and try to clear our minds. We have put together some tips, and products that can help you relax.
Deep Breathing It may sound simple, but focusing on your breathing for a few minuets everyday can help hugely to help you relax.
1. Breathe slowly and deeply in through your nose, and out through your mouth in a steady rhythm. Try to make your breath out twice as long as your breath in. To do this you may find it helpful to count slowly "one, two" as you breathe in, and "one, two, three, four" as you breathe out.
2. Mainly use your diaphragm (lower chest muscle) to breathe. Your diaphragm is the big muscle under the lungs. It pulls the lungs downwards which expands the airways to allow air to flow in. When we become anxious we tend to forget to use this muscle and often use the muscles at the top of the chest and our shoulders instead. Each breath is more shallow if you use these upper chest muscles. So, you tend to breathe faster, and feel more breathless and anxious, if you use your upper chest muscles rather than your diaphragm.
You can check if you are using your diaphragm by feeling just below your breastbone (sternum) at the top of your abdomen. If you give a little cough, you can feel the diaphragm push out here. If you hold your hand here you should feel it move in and out as you breathe.
3. Try to relax your shoulders and upper chest muscles when you breathe. With each breath out, consciously try to relax those muscles until you are mainly using your diaphragm to breathe.
Massage your face This may sound too good to be true, but massaging your face can not only help you relax, but can help reduce signs of ageing too. Your face contains acupressure points that can help your whole body relax, and clear your mind. To do this, its best to use a specially formulated face cream or serum. I'd recommend Sublimage Concentrate by Chanel. This carefully formulated serum, has been created by using a unique active ingredient of the golden flower of the Himalayas. Within this plant is a concentration of flower esters which increases cellular metabolism and has revitalising properties. Apply this magical serum morning and night using the face massage technique, and your skin will soon be radiant, younger and beautifully clear. www.chanel.co.uk
Massage Technique Stroke your whole face starting from your neck, and working your way up and across your cheeks, up to and over your forehead. Use long sweeping stroke, and never stroke down. Starting from the middle of your forehead above your brow bone, gentle move outwards in small circles using your fingers. Using your fingers, push gently along each side of your nose and hen continue out under each eye along your eye socket. Do this in one gentle movement. Using your fingers, from the ridge of your nose, press systematically along your eyebrows outwards. Gently massage your temples in a circle motion with two fingers on each side, and slowly move upwards and outwards. Using your index fingers press firmly under your nose and sweep up towards your cheek bones. This may sound like a long process, but you will soon find a variation that will work for you. Of course not everyone has time to practice this everyday, but even a small 30 second massage will make a difference in your complexion and relaxation.
Acupressure Acupressure is an ancient healing art using the fingers and other parts of the body to skillfully press key points, which stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. When these trigger points are pressed, they release muscular tension, and promote circulation of blood, and the body's life force energy to aid healing. Practising acupressure at home is easier than you think. If you don't have time to learn about all the pressure points over the body, the Yantra Mat is the perfect. The Yantra Mat consists of 8,820 acupressure contact points which provide equal pressure at all points. Made out of 100% cotton and 100% non-toxic plastic, it couldn't be easier to feel the effects of acupressure. You can lie on the matt on your back or stomach, place it on a chair or sit against it. I personally find just standing on the mat deeply relaxing. At first the mat can be a little uncomfortable so its best to wear some cotton clothes until you adjust to the effects. www.theyantramat.co.uk
