Harrods insults fitness- By not allowing runners in for a drink. We've seen plenty of sweaty men waltzing around this "high class" shop. With temperatures at an all time high, will the doormen be saying no to business men with a sweat on, or is it just our fitness friends? Julia Buckley was refused entrance by Harrods staff Hurt: Julia Buckley was refused entrance by Harrods staff Harrods refused to let ‘sweaty’ runners buy bottle of waterSecurity staff at Harrods have been accused of humiliating two runners who called in for refreshments after a run in the hot weather by refusing them entry to the store. Julia Buckley and Gertrud Porter said they were made to feel “like criminals” when trying to enter the Knightsbridge department store on Friday morning for water and a sandwich. Ms Buckley, from Harrow-on-the-Hill, said: “The doorman looked us up and down and asked if we'd been on a marathon. He told us we couldn't come in dressed like that.” The pair had been on a 20-mile run through London and finished at Hyde Park. They were wearing running shorts and t-shirts. Ms Buckley's arm was bandaged after she fell and fractured it that day, which the doorman also questioned. Ms Buckley, 33, said: “There were all these women going in to the store dressed in little tops and shorts, much shorter than ours. “It was really humiliating, I felt like a criminal being held at the door.” The doorman allowed the runners in after checking with a manager. The Harrods dress code forbids athletic singlets, cycling shorts and dirty or “unkempt” clothing. Ms Buckley added: “I had hoped for a better welcome from what is supposed to be a friendly customer-focused store. “It was pretty bizarre considering Harrods incorporates a well-known chain of running shops where they sell the kind of kit we were wearing.” A spokesperson for Harrods said they had no record of the incident but store policy does not include “excessive sweat”. She said: “We do not allow entry to those dressed in work-soiled or excessively sweaty clothing.” www.thisislondon.co.uk BBC Sport Top Stories |

Teenagers sold diet pills meant for over-18s by leading online chemists By EMILY ANDREWS Leading chemists are selling diet pills to children and those suffering from eating disorders, an investigation has found. The £1-a-day slimming pill Alli should only be available over the counter without a prescription to over-18s with a high body mass index. But the BBC's Watchdog programme found Boots sold the drug to a schoolgirl online while both Boots and Lloyds Pharmacy sold Alli to a recovering anorexic over the web. Many teenagers have been using the internet to purchase diet pill Alli When the drug was sold in branches of the chemists, patients' height, weight and BMI were checked - and if under weight they were refused the tablets. But online the vetting procedures were much more lax. The Alli pills should only be available over the counter without a prescription to over-18s with a high BMI Applicants were able to lie about their BMI and their purchase was then approved. Alli prevents the body from absorbing fat in food and in trials helped slimmers lose anything from 10lb to five stone over six months. When confronted with the investigation's results, Lloyds Pharmacy said it would tighten regulations. But Boots said it 'could not let the actions of a few' stop it helping millions of people lose weight and it would not change its policy. Watchdog launched its investigation after leading eating disorder charity Beat warned Alli was easily available online. Recovering anorexic Jenna Newman, 26, who works for an eating disorder charity in Derby, said she was sold the products after lying about her BMI. 'When I went into the branches of Boots and Lloyds to test their instore policy, staff turned me away after checking my height and weight,' she said. 'Yet when I logged on to each company's website, I gave a false BMI suggesting I was overweight and both websites agreed to send me the pills. It's terrible, it makes me really angry. It's just like buying a pair of shoes' Watchdog also found that Boots sold Alli to a 16-year-old girl who gave her real age but that the Lloyds website turned her away. Professor Steve Field, of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said that Alli interfered with vitamin absorption and so can be dangerous for children. Boots said: 'We have taken the isolated incident very seriously. We have reminded our e-pharmacy teams of the checks that they should follow for the sale of pharmacy medicines to ensure we remain vigilant.' Lloyds Pharmacy said it had introduced 'additional cross-checks' to its online service. A spokesman for pharmaceutical giant GSK said: 'It is important to understand that studies in adolescents have shown that the safety profile of Orlistat (the active ingredient in alli) is similar to that in adults. There is no evidence to support claims that alli reduces vitamin levels in adolescents to a degree that would cause any harm. Furthermore there are no additional safety concerns for people with eating disorder.' Brown rice 'lowers risk of diabetes by 16 per cent' By DAILY MAIL REPORTER Last updated at 8:41 AM on 15th June 2010 Diabetes risk: Switching to brown rice from white could cut the chances of developing the condition Switching from white rice to brown rice could dramatically reduce your chances of developing diabetes, a study has found. Wholegrain rice raises the body's blood sugar levels far less dramatically than white rice, which is little more than starch, according to researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health. Their study, believed to be the first of its kind, found that replacing 50g (1.8oz), or a third of a serving, of white rice per day with brown rice would cut the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 16 per cent. A switch to whole, unrefined grains should be recommended 'from from a public health point of view', the scientists added. About 2.3million people in the UK have Type 2 diabetes, and numbers are rising. There are fears that more than 4 million will have the condition by 2025, placing a 'terrifying' burden on the cash-strapped NHS. People with diabetes have problems synthesising their sugar, and uncontrolled blood sugar levels can cause sufferers to fall into a coma, kidney failure, ulcers or nerve damage. The Harvard scientists studied the diets of more than 190,000 men and women. After adjusting for age and other lifestyle and dietary risk factors, they found that those who consumed five or more servings of white rice per week had a 17 per cent increased risk of diabetes compared with those who had no more than one serving per month. Study author, Dr Qi Sun, wrote: 'The high glycaemic index of white rice consumption is likely to be the consequence of disrupting the physical and botanical structure of rice grains during the refining process - in which almost all the bran and some of the germ are removed. 'The other consequence of the refining process includes loss of fibre, vitamins, magnesium and other minerals, many of which may be protective factors for diabetes risk.' He added: 'From a public health point of view, replacing refined grains such as white rice by whole grains, including brown rice, should be recommended to facilitate the prevention of type 2 diabetes. 'Rice has been a staple food in Asian countries for centuries. By the 20th century, the advance of grain-processing technology made large-scale production of refined grains possible. 'Through refining processes, the other bran and germ portions of intact rice grains (i.e. brown rice) are removed to produce white rice that primarily consists of starchy endosperm.' Rice played a groundbreaking role in the history of medicine when researchers noticed that Japanese sailors fed a diet of white rice were more prone to the disease beriberi - while those who ate a Western-style diet rarely succumbed. Later studies showed that chickens fed brown rice did not suffer from beriberi, while those on white rice often did. English biochemist Frederick Hopkins realised there was a vital chemical in the coating of the rice which protected against disease - and led to the discovery of vitamins. Researchers studied the number of those living up to ten years after being diagnosed with the disease and the result is the country's first ever 'cancer map' which breaks down survival rates. Early detection and effective treatments are believed to be the reason behind the improving survival rates which are currently rising by 3.2 per cent every year. This map shows by region how many people have lived for more than ten years after first being told they had cancer. The darker blue areas indicate where the better survival rates area As each region has different population levels the researchers needed to use a mathematical formula which would enable them to see these variations. To this end they calculated what is known as an 'age standardised proportion' - this allows the comparisons to be made between the different areas. So, in the darkest blue regions there is a larger proportion of people living with cancer ie in every 100,000 people between 1,575 to 1,734 will be living with cancer. There are currently two million people living with cancer, according to figures from the National Cancer Intelligence Network. More... The sunscreen scam: We spend millions every year on sun protection... so why is skin cancer still on the rise? Of that number 1.1million are either living with or in remission from the disease having been diagnosed a decade before. LIVING WITH CANCER Two million people in the United Kingdom have been diagnosed with cancer. Of that number 1.1million are living with or in remission from the disease having been diagnosed a decade before. This breaks down as 939,000 people in England; 100,000 in Scotland; 63,000 in Wales; and 29,000 in Northern Ireland. The data has compiled in a nationwide map by Macmillan Cancer Support, which shows regional variations in the number of people alive after a cancer diagnosis in the past one, five and ten years. Across Britain the most prevalent women's cancer is breast cancer while for men it is the prostate. Breast cancer accounts for 48 per cent of female cancer cases (296,000 in total) in those who have been diagnosed in the past ten years. Prostate cancer accounts for 36 per cent of cancer cases (181,000) in men. Colon cancer is the second most prevalent cancer in men (15 per cent) and women (10 per cent). As lung cancer has a very poor prognosis very few people, only 4 per cent, make it past the ten-year barrier. Ciaran Devane, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, said the data would be useful for planning long-term cancer care. 'These new statistics show that cancer is no longer necessarily a death sentence and NHS services need to adapt to offer the right long-term care to these people,' she said. Paul Burstow, Care Services Minister, said: 'It's great news that survival rates for many cancers are improving. This will provide increased hope to patients undergoing treatment and their families. 'We are working in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support to identify improvements that can be made. It is vital that everyone receives the level of support they need following treatment.' Around 250,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK. A third of us will be diagnosed with the disease at some point of our lives, with the risk increasing with age. Professor Sir Mike Richards, National Cancer Director said: 'Survival rates for cancer are improving year by year, with more people being alive at any one time who have had a diagnosis of cancer. 'Through the National Cancer Survivorship Initiative (NCSI) we are working to ensure that survivors get the care and support they need to lead as healthy and active a life as possible, for as long as poss Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1288282/Map-UK-cancer-survivors-shows-record-numbers-Britons-living-disease.html#ixzz0rW7vybo2

The 22-year-old dancer - who got through to the final on Monday night after winning the judges' vote - is a fan of the movies. That's Edward, not Jedward ... Twilight's Robert Pattinson He told TV Biz: "What I've got planned is really me for the final. I'll give you a one-word teaser: Twilight. "Maybe you can expect vampire teeth. I like darkness." Tobias has read all four of Stephanie Meyer's Twilight books. His favourite film character is werewolf Jacob, played by Taylor Lautner - but he is also a fan of Robert "R-Patz" Pattinson's blood-sucking vampire Edward. He added: "I've seen all the films. I'd love to be in them - that would make me the happiest person in the world. "I'm Team Jacob but I do like Edward and Robert Pattinson, who's a great actor. I like the whole vampire thing. It's not about being sexy, it's about the darkness." Tobias wowed the audience on Monday night with his floating ball routine - and admitted he'd been given the trick by top magician Don Wayne. 'Fastest OAP' took ten-mile short cut in the London marathon Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1282952/Fastest-OAP-took-mile-short-cut-London-marathon.html#ixzz0pag9woIj
When 69-year-old Anthony Gaskell crossed the London Marathon finishing line in a mere three hours and five minutes, he found himself in the record books. His was the fastest time ever recorded by anyone over 65 and he was due to receive a plaque marking his achievement. Observers questioned, however, how a previously unknown veteran could have performed so well. And analysis of the race revealed that he must have completed the second half in way under an hour - a pace that even the world record holder could not match. Six weeks after the event, Mr Gaskell has been stripped of his 'fastest pensioner' title after admitting that he took a short cut. He appears to have used a part of the course just after Tower Bridge - where the marathon doubles back on itself - to cut from the outward leg to the home leg, taking around ten miles off the course. Mr Gaskell, a grandfather from the Wirral, Merseyside, said: 'I have been called a cheat and disqualified from a race I never claimed to have won.' He claimed he was injured after falling over a runner ahead of him who had tripped on a safety barrier. 'I couldn't possibly continue.' He insists he never claimed to have run the last part of the course and that he did not try to pass off the winning time as his own. 'I simply walked through a short cut to the end of the course where my belongings were waiting for me. I had no idea that anyone thought I'd won. 'I didn't bother to check the website for the final standings because I knew I had dropped out.'
His disqualification is good news for 66-year-old Colin Rathbone, who finished 38 seconds behind Mr Gaskell after completing the full 26 miles and 385 yards. He will now receive the fastest pensioner's plaque.
Mr Rathbone, from Northwich in Cheshire, said: 'I trained for the race for months, starting proper marathon training in January. I had to stop for a while with a bad chest infection in the winter but I got through it. 'Last year I came third in the over-65 race and I wanted to win this time. I finished in just over three hours, five minutes and thought I must have won. 'It was the best time in ten years. When I was told I had been beaten I thought, "What the heck do you have to do to win this thing?".' Other members of the Vale Royal Athletics Club became suspicious and checked the records of Mr Gaskell's progress round the course. According to his electronic timing chip, worn by all runners, he completed the first 20km, or 121/2 miles, in just over two hours. There was then a gap in the chip readings before he crossed the 40km mark around 41 minutes later. The Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie's pace in the second 20km was far slower than this when he set the world record of two hours, three minutes 59 seconds in Berlin in 2008. Once the discrepancy was pointed out to the London organisers, they took action. 'I'm elated that I did actually win,' said Mr Rathbone. 'I do wonder what Mr Gaskell's motivation was.' While Mr Gaskell insists he is still a serious runner with the Wirral Athletics Club, it says he has no connection to it. General secretary Leo Carroll said: 'Tony Gaskell has not been a paid-up member for at least 12 years.'
